Iowa activists cited at Biden’s Iowa HQ

Des Moines, IA – Five members of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Fund (CCI Action) and Iowa Student Action were just arrested at the statewide campaign headquarters of Joe Biden for President. The CCI Action members were part of a larger group who occupied the office for three hours, demanding to meet with Vice President Joe Biden to address ongoing lies about Medicare for All he is spinning on the campaign trail.

“We are sick and tired of seeing our families, friends, and neighbors suffer under the cruelty of a healthcare system dominated by greed,” said Cherie Mortice, retired teacher and CCI Action board president, from Des Moines. “We are here [at the Biden for President office] today because Vice President Biden is lying about Medicare for All and he’s doing the bidding of health insurance executives and CEOs. The lies he’s telling hurt people. He needs to stop the lies and cut the ties.”

CCI Action members were also questioning the validity of Biden’s claims to reduce special interest/lobbyist contributions after reviewing campaign finance reports. The group points to Biden’s ongoing support from wealthy donors and special interests as glaring concerns about Biden’s big money ties.

“While thousands of Iowans are fighting for their lives and worrying about medical bills, Biden is chatting up millionaires and billionaires who can give the maximum contributions to his campaign without batting an eye,” said Denise Cheeseman, a student organizer with Iowa Student Action, from Iowa City. “We shouldn’t have to wonder who Vice President Biden would work for – us or those who profit by denying us care.”

CCI Action’s Twitter feed has a detailed account of the protest which started at 5 pm today: twitter.com/cciaction.

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Fund is a 501c4 non-profit organization dedicated to building social, economic, and environmental justice through community organizing, education, and advocacy.
