Mike Matson Exits Governors Race

Another grassroots candidate for governor has left the field as former Army Ranger, Mike Matson, announced within the hour that he was ending his bid for Governor on Twitter.

“It has been my honor and privilege to meet so many wonderful people around this state,” Matson tweeted. “However, I must suspend my run for GOV because my grassroots campaign cannot raise the many millions needed. I have been so fortunate to meet so many wonderful people. Your kindness is overwhelming. Take care.”

The amount of money required of a candidate to simply run for a seat has been a growing subject of conversation among Progressive circles as of late. Some have questioned whether the high benchmarks make higher state offices unattainable to otherwise excellent candidates who desire to focus more on people and grassroots activism.

Matson exit was preceded by another grassroots candidate, former Iowa DNR Director, Rich Leopold, in early June.
