Sanders, Garza to Speak at CCI Convention

Two powerful and captivating leaders will be making their way to Iowa as the keynote and featured speakers at this year’s Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement convention, taking place in Des Moines on July 15th.

Two years ago, Senator Bernie Sanders started him campaign for president in Iowa among small but curious crowds. That small drop quickly turned into a tidal wave and helped to spark the beginnings of a movement that this country was desperately in need of. Now he will be returning to Iowa for the first time since the 2016 election to deliver the keynote address at the CCI event.

“We like Bernie’s style of politics and want to see more campaigns like his. He mobilized tens of thousands of Iowans around a strong economic justice message and emphasized the importance of building a people’s movement to challenge and change big money, business-as-usual politics,” said Barb Kalbach, president of the CCI Action board of directors. “We are very excited to have him back in Iowa this July to discuss how we can continue the political revolution here in the pivotal state of Iowa.”

In addition to the good Senator from Vermont, Alicia Garza, co-founder of the #BlackLivesMatter network, was recently announced to be featured speaker at the event.  She has organized around several issues such as student services, student rights, health, rights for domestic workers, ending police brutality, anti-racism, and violence against trans and gender non-conforming people of color. Her editorial writing has been published by The Guardian, The Nation, The Feminist Wire, Rolling Stone, Huffington Post and She currently directs Special Projects at the National Domestic Workers Alliance.

The convention will feature issue-focused organizing workshops, speeches from other movement leaders, and celebrations of CCI Action victories from the past year.
